Mr. Steve, Funny thing you bring this up. I read on Syncro list two week ago, that a member there had bad gas mileage. I did what he did, and take all the rock out of cat. I find now that my Van is better in the gas, and is much faster. And It passed test for emmissions last week with none. I think, why spend all that money when not a needed thing? I think that machine manage the emiisions without converter OK. Not a hard job if muffler and cat taken out at once. Then you work on cat on the ground or bench. Very easy then.

Good Evening,

Fred

Subject: replace cat converter - tough job? A recent smog check on my '90 GL indicates that the catalytic converter needs to be replaced. This is confirmed by my trustworthy mechanic with whom I reviewed the numbers from the test center printout. He quoted me around $300 for the job. Since this is a "no moving parts" kind of component and it's in an accessible place on the vehicle, what are the chances that I can get the converter from BusDepot for $100 + shipping and do it myself? I'm no master mechanic, but I'm no moron either. Any reassurances or warnings appreciated. -- Steve Gross '86 Westy RIP '87 Westy '90 GL
