It certainly IS proof as the O2 circuit and catalyst isn't there! :)

Obviously, that was an idle test only.
The 1.716% CO reading is proof that the O2 sensor circuit is not
working. Should be under 1.0 before the Catalyst. The 342 HC reading is
a sign the Cat is also gone or not working. Here in NY you are a gross
polluter. Here, everything 81 and later has to be below 1.2% CO and 220
PPM HC.

Today in Quesnel they had a road-side "Air Care" facility setup - free
inspection and report with no questions asked and no fines handed out.
Cool
I thought... so I took my Syncro Westfalia Joker to the place and did
the
smog test. It is equipped with a 112hp high compression ratio 2.1L
motor
with no O2 sensor or catalitic converter. I passed! I though the stats
were a little high, but a pass is a pass none the less.
CO 1.716%
HC 342ppm
Pass for a >1.8 to 2.6L motor from 1982 to 1987 was 4.35% CO and 380ppm
HC -
I think those specs are too high personally.
JFYI here are the passing grades for a the displacement of a Vanagon:
YEAR CO HC
1982 - 1987 4.35% 380ppm
1988 - 1995 0.85% 110ppm
1996 - 2003 0.55% 85ppm
Big jump from 1987 to 1988! I will take my van back to the place
tomorrow
armed with an allen key and see if I can get the CO down to the
1988-1995
level and see what happens to the HCs at that point... should be
interesting!
