I'd sure like to know the name of the independent mechanic and especially the VW dealer you are talking about. Although I wouldn't take my Vanagon to a dealer to get fixed, I sometimes (rarely) buy parts at the dealership. Since I'm in L.A., it would be nice to boycott them on your behalf.
