I have the EXACT same symptoms that you describe...always at 2900 rpm
on my '85 manual. It runs fine above and below this RPM, but when you
get it there...oh boy! I have borrowed/tried a number of other parts.
AFM and AFM cleaning, temp 2 sender, O2 sensor, cap&rotor, distributor,
plugs, plug wires, all grounds cleaned, and it still persists. I don't
want to replace all parts. It was needing the ignition stuff replaced
so I didn't feel had doing that, but I don't want to start buying
everything blindly.
Mine mainly does it in the fall, winter and spring when the temperature
is cool or cold. It is temperature sensitive (both the temp of the van
and ambient temp). In the summertime, it only lurches occasionally. In
the winter is does it mostly when warmed up and in the summer it will
only do it on a cool morning before it warms up. It has nothing to do
with speed since I can increase the idle while in neutral and the
engine cuts out at 2900.
I had quite a few suggestions and couldn't figure it out. I'm positive
that it didn't have to do with the gas because this was a daily driver
at the time and it had fresh gas. It just started doing this one day
and hasn't stopped since. Summer is the only time that it is mostly
driveable.
Here's my previous post...
History
----------
Last winter, my vanagon developed a severe "hiccup" when I was cruising
at 2900 RPM. It doesn't do it all the time, but it does it a lot now
that it's not summer. During the summer it is not nearly as bad, but it
still will do iton occasion. What happens is when the tachometer is
passing 2900 RPM it will give a terrible sounding and feeling lurch. If
I'm accelerating hard, it will usually just do it once assuming I pass
through 2900 RPM quickly.
• If I'm trying to cruise at 2900 RPM (any gear) it will continue
lurching.
• It doesn't occur at any other engine speeds.
