It is a pain in the ass to remove the head with the engine in the van.
here is what you need to do:
1)Disconnect the battery.
2) Remove the drives side injector tubes.
3) Remove the engine rubber seal.
4) Remove the cylinder head temp sender near the fire wall driver side.
5) Remove the sheet metal on the driver side.
6) You should be looking at the cylinder head by now.
7) I'm guessing you've got one of two things (1)Dropped valve seat (2)
Scored cylinder wall.
If you were pumping oil its going to be broken rings and a scored
cylinder wall. If you just don't have compression then its a valve seat.
8) To pull the head. Remove the valve cover, remove the rocker arms,
remove the heater box, this should let you get to the bolts. You'll need
to pull the sheet metal from the push-rod covers, remove the push rod
tubes and push rods. After you've got the bolts loose (nuts off) hit the
head a time or two with a rubber hammer and it should slide off the
studs.
This will probably take about 4 hours the first time you do it.
Once you get the head off you'll need to examine it to see if you've
dropped a valve seat.
If your valve seats appear good then pull the cylinder and examine the
rings and cylinder bore. You may be able to turn the engine and draw the
piston down into the cylinder deep enough to see the cylinder walls
without pulling the cylinder.
I've skipped a thing or two like pulling your muffler and some things
that you'll easily see need to be removed.
I know you don't have a lot of money so I'll give you a piston and
cylinder if you need them but I need a 100 for that cylinder head if you
need it. If you need the piston and cylinder you'll need to bring your
old piston so we can weigh it and get you a match on manufacturer and
weight.
Try to hit a used book store and get a copy of the Hayes manual and it
will be a big help to you. They are only $16.00 new from Amazon so don't
get hooked by Ebay for anything more than $6.00 + postage for one.
