Hi,

My camper is an '82. It used to be a standard 1.6l Diesel, but in 1998 I bought and put in a new 1.9l Turbo Diesel of the type found in Jettas and Golfs. This type of swap is quite doable. I did it in a few weeks, spending evenings assembling and preparing the new engine, then with the help of a friend we swapped it for the old one a saturday afternoon.

There's even a guy somewhere on the west coast doing them semi-professionally. I'm afraid I forgot his name, but someone on the list may know.

I have some pictures of the engine swap on: http://cs-www.cs.yale.edu/homes/jag/vw/engine/diesel1.9/motormountExpo.html http://cs-www.cs.yale.edu/homes/jag/vw/VWpics7_25_99/

Best, Martin

Dear Sir: I read with great interest your article about Westfalia Campers which I found on your website. I wondered what year your camper is, and which engine it has.

Thanks for an informative article. My partner and I are seriously planning to buy a camper next Fall, when the nest is "empty", for some exploration of our home state of Washington, and for some travels in the Southwest.

Thanks in advance,

Dwight Davis
