Not so fast. Oil viscosity can also break down over time, and my old boxer was living proof that Castrol 20W50 is probably closer to ?W-inadequate when you try and push it beyond the recommended severe service 3,000 mile oil change interval. As you know, that damn buzzer sure gets your attention! When it happens a few thousand miles from home, the first thing you think about is whether you've paid your AAA dues.

A switch to synthetic worked for me, since my Westy is used mostly as a long hauler, and stops for routine service that I'd rather perform at home myself are a PITA. Now, at around 8,000 miles, I start to *think* about changing it. <G>
