Alan,As far as fixes on a Vanagon, this one is easy. You will have to crawl under the front of the van to fix this.Go under the van, remove the spare tire. There is an area where the two heater hoses come together to feed into the heater, in front of the shifter mechanism and in between the radiator fan.Look up and feel in that area, the hot coolant tap is located ther along with the cable from the lever. You can either move it to the off position or fix the movement.I suspect that the clamp that holds the cable tightly in place has let go.If you still have the little clamp/clasp that holds the cable tight in place then attempt to re-clamp-it. This could be a royal PITA depending on the entire tap and clamp. It can be done, so be patient. Like I said if you do not want to fight with it now, you can just move the lever to close off the coolant from the heater core and things should cool down a bit.if you do get cold, just use your rear heater and leave the front off.Cheers and good luck,Joel89 Syncro WestyRochester NY.

The temperature control for the front heater (middle lever of the three levers, is stuck in the right (hot) position. When I try to move it to the left (cold) it won't go very far before encountering a springy resistance - feels like a cable is kinked or obstructed in some way.

Anyone had this happen - can tell me what the fix is. The idea of going in behind the dash scares me. I've seen so many cases where even professionals open up a dash to fix one thing and succeed - but 2 or 3 other things don't work afterward. Guidance/advice would be appreciated.
