Over the years I've seen many things come and go that are supposed to help an engine perform better. Most are fairly inventive like the Mini Supercharger, simply a tiny fan that went between the Carb and intake manifold. Back in the 50s with low tech carbs leaded fuels it might have actually worked to some degree. The Vari Cam was a spring loaded timing gear that changed timing in reference to the friction resistance on the cam, it sorta worked. The 2, 3, 4 contactor spark plugs have been around since the early 20s and most will give some minor improvement. As a racer we ran a length of coiled up aluminum tubing through a coffee can filled with ice the fuel was cooled and it actually helped some. Diesels use preheaters on their fuel in many applications. It is the intent of Auto Manufacturers to build a car as cheaply as possible that will make it through the warranty period .............. after that you're own your own. My Brothers Lexus with 87K on it will not pass Texas Emissions testing, it puts out a puff of smoke with every start up. Right out of warranty after the 50K extended warranty. This Lexus has always been a lemon. Manufacturers don't pick up new tech! It is normally the Government that forces them to. Automobile engines were designed by capable engineers ................ about 1 engine in 100,000 comes off the production line that actually meets the specifications. More power will come as a by product of buying a blue printed engine with all the production line flaws removed. The recent buyer of my 83 Westy commented that he was surprised at the power and acceleration of the heavy Westy. I was pleased to hear that and I'm glad he got a van with the best engine I could possibly build at the time I built it. Once I get my Engine Ceramics shop set up I'm going to build a Type IV with all of the available ceramic coating and see if I can best my best with the ceramics technology. That is just a wait and see scenario at this date.
