I just thought I would take this opportunity to remind you all that if, by some chance, you torque a drain bolt down WITHOUT a washer--that bolt will get stuck in the case EVERY time. So even if you don't have a new washer from VW (and I reuse mine when I don't have a new one handy) use it anyway! This was one of the subtle Vanagon lessons I learned early on in the ownership of my vehicle.
