Subject: Great News! After presenting Mercury insurance with documentation
(invoices and comparable vehicle pricing) they decided to repair
              my Westy.
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Below is the information sent to the adjuster. Special thanks to a list member for making the RV suggestion and another who pointed me to wesfalia.org where I found most of the pricing information. **************************************************************************************************************************************** Subject; Valuation of Vanagon 83.5 - 84 (Water cooler) Westfalia full Camper.

Note: 1. This vehicle is not simply a van, but a motor home (RV) by its classification and is used as weekend car for the purposes of camping.

2. Please use the classification of motor home for valuation of improvements and restoration of vehicle during the appraisal process. If this requires an RV appraisal type service please initiate that process.

3. Attached is a sample of pricing for vehicles that are at a level of 50% -60% of the restoration of my Westfalia camper. The reason that I cannot find one that has been restored to level of my car is that once completed they seldom sold. In addition, most people keep these campers for long periods of time and campers seldom have more than two or three owners over a 20year period.

Based on 6 hours of Internet search I located 14 Westfalia campers (83.5 to 85) basically the same car. They changed in 1986 and stayed the same until 1991 (last year of production in the US)

A. Three 83.5 @ an average price of $7,066 B. Seven 84 @ an average price of $8,421 C. Four 85 @ an average price of $6,650

Repair of my van is currently estimated at $3,900 bodywork and between $1,000 and $1,500 in engine repair. Total cost to repair is between $4,900 and $5,400. Based on a statement made by your adjuster "your company will pay to repair up to the full value of a vehicle" The average price between 83.5 and 85 is just over $7,000 which is well within your 100% policy.
