It is hard to explain a loss of fuel economy as a
crack should decrease fuel econmy and increase power
but the poor smog reading can easily be explained by
the crack. The crack will cause higher than normal
o2 levels inside the exhaust generating increased
voltage from the 02 sensor telling the ecu to send
more chessburger please. This rich mixture may have
done damage to the cat converter. If your planning
on satying in california I would save for a cat
converter. Which brings up a question I have.
Has anyone in california bought one of those economy
priced cat converters from busdepot? Do they work
well enough to keep your hydrocarbon levels low?
Getting back to the first question about poor fuel
economy. I would measure the voltage of the 02
sensor and perhaps replace the temp2 sensor.

Subject: just passed CA smog, but poor mileage
Hi all,
I just got my 84 Wolfy Manual WBX smogged 4 days ago,
CA smog. It
passed. But I am getting worse fuel mileage than I
used to. To the tune
of 15/16 mpg instead of 18-20mpg. It was in the shop
because the water
pump was leaking, and the driver side exhaust pipe,
right after the
header, the one the OX sensor screws into, was
replaced, because it had
a crack. Went to smog it afterwards and the results
were: HC: 127@15mph
(129 allowed, 46 average), 87@25 mph (101allowed, 32
average). The CO
were 0.27@15mph (0.84 max allowed, 0.16 ave),
0.19@25mph (1.06max
allowed, 0.15 average) the NO were 822@15mph (1076 max
allowed, 406
ave) and 299 @ 25mph (1103 max allowed, 349 ave).
Seems like I barely passed on he HC, which means I
have a rich mixture,
right??
Where should I start looking?? Could my fuel
tank/lines be leaking??
I'm guessing it's the OX sensor. Any and all input
greatly appreciated.
Happy Trails
matthias
