Well, one does not HAVE to remove the hub cum brake drum, but it is a lot easier and less abusive to the components. Oh, and a hell of a lot faster.

If one still is intent on dismissing the wisdom of the shop manual, then the quickest way to break the interference fit between the drum and the hub is to strike the outer diameter of the drum with a sharp blow from a 2 lb. hammer aimed INBOARD of the drum.
