I'm not sure about the "easier" part. I'm sure it's easier to swap out the brake shoes with the hub removed, but removing and then retorquing a 500Nm nut involves some effort. I suppose if you have power tools to handle that nut the job overall becomes "easier" but if you're using manual tools - cheater bars, extenders and so forth - I suspect you might get some arguement about which way pencils out as "easier." It's all moot to me in any case since I don't have the tools, manual or otherwise, to deal with that nut.

I'm also not sure about the "less abusive" part, either. I usually haven't had too much difficulty removing the drums so I'm not sure what abuse I'm making the components suffer.
