Subject: Re: Oil leak oddity
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hello Fellows,

I just installed a air cooled 1,8 in my Westphalia.

I did the rebuild myself and it is not the first engine I do, Although it is the first pancake. But I have done Porsche engines before. I think I did follow the book very closely,

The engine has two Solex, electric fuel pump, (thus a blanking plate where the mechanical pump once was), Pertronic and it is stock otherwise.

The engine starts and runs well, sounds great and does not vibrate.

There is a slow leak from the right cam cover, fine,

The odd problem is that there is a large leak of oil from the general area of the oil cooler immediately AFTER the engine is switched off. Then it stops, after damping say a 1/2 quart. If the engine is restarted and then switched off even only after a few second, the leak reappears. Then it stops.

What is this? Does not leak under pressure, but does at rest, for a while only.

I took the cooler out, it is not leaking, it may be leaking from the cooler to block seals, but why? It is all new and seemingly in good shape.

Any help much appreciated.

Best Regards, Andrea
