It is likely that someone repacked your cv joint, but used axle grease instead of cv joint grease. CV Joint grease has this wonderful property of clinging to metals so it stays on as you drive. You will notice that there is nothing on either side on the cv joint to keep the grease in...

If you put on high quality cv joint grease, it will last for years. But I would remove, clean, and repack every three years or so.
