The strainer doesn't hold any oil but the valve covers, lifters, sump
dump area, oil galleries, oil pump will hold some oil.
If you check your oil first thing in the morning before you start the
engine much of this oil is down in the pan.
After you start the engine some drop on the stick can be expected.
The total illusion is that there is way too much or way too little oil
because the oil pan is shaped like a baking sheet and is very shallow and
wide and long. Just a slight off level location will give some strange
readings.
I like to run my oil about 1/8" down on the dipstick below the max mark
after it's warmed up.
I also installed windage trays in the last four engines I built to keep
the oil in the pan.
A full discussion of windage trays is in the archives. They aren't a
necessity but nice to install if you ever have reason to split the case.
