Sure, it can and has been done. It is not easy. Don't just buy a Syncro tank as you also need all the filler parts and the 4 strap pieces to hold it up there. You will need to lower the mounting position of your engine and trans about 1.5" to make more room above the trans. It would be best if the person doing the install was the same person who took the tank and parts out of the Syncro. Measurements and templates of the openings should be done. Your trans and engine need to come out. Then a mounting plate for the front end of the straps needs to be made and attached to the tranny side of the slanted metal area under the back seat. The holes for the other ends of the straps are already present in the 2wd body. Then you need to make holes in the wheel wheel for the filler pipe and vent line. Then you need a square hole in the right side at the proper location for the Syncro filler neck. Then you need to force the tank up into proper position while guiding the lines and not damaging anything. This can be quite a struggle even on a stock Syncro. It must be done just so or it won't go.
