Don't waste your time trying to solve the mystery. About once a year (20k) I take a long stem Q-tip and glide it along side a screwdriver through the shaft seal on the axle. From the amount of grease I come out with I decide if it gets another 3 oz or not. There are cups on the outside end of each CV, both at the tranny outlet shaft and stub axle, I always fill these voids when I repack CVs. It takes considerably more grease than 3 oz but it keeps everything running good but I often still add grease about once a year. I'll send a picture of the grease gun adapter if you want it.
