I'm curious, too. Mine engages within a couple inches of the top, but I have resistance through all but the first 3/8" or so of travel, so I don't think it's a master cylinder pushrod problem. I was thinking maybe my clutch disc was just getting thin. Are they all like this? It doesn't slip and take-up is smooth (unless the van has sat in wet weather for a few days) so I've been just leaving well enough alone.
