Steve, I just did two Vanagon rear wheel bearing changes this week ! NO washers ! Bentley is giving out false information ---- AGAIN ! Don't forget to change the bearing spacer, available only from your friendly neighbourhood VW dealer at an exorbitant price but absolutely necessary to do this job right. Use good quality wheel bearing grease packed in well. AND, torque the axle nut to spec with the vehicle on the ground ! USE anti-seize on the threads and if you R&R this nut at least once a year from now on you will never have a problem with the rear wheel bearings again. If the interface surfaces of the nut and hub are not flat make them so. If the nut is buggered up replace it.
