To all those who responded to my plea for help (see below), thanks,
especially to Aaron who had the same problem.
I think it's fixed. Here's what happened.
Last fall in response to a stalling problem I replaced the AFM, O2 sensor
and the ECU with a new-used one. I didn't drive during the winter so
didn't get a chance to check the thing until recently when my problem
started. On the off-chance that the ECU was faulty, I put the original one
back in (I hadn't thrown it away, fortunately) to see what would happen at
3000 rpm. The engine ran perfectly. I put the replacement ECU back in and
the stuttering started again. Tried it again to make sure, and the same
thing happened. The original worked and the replacement didn't. I've put
the original back in and am carrying the replacement for insurance since
I'm not sure that the last-fall stalling problem may not come back (I'm not
sure what was causing it, but probably it was the AFM) and the replacement
doesn't stall.
I could get a rebuilt ECU but being the cheapskate I am, would rather not
shell out the $150-$200 if it's not absolutely necessary. I'm also not
sure what may have caused the replacement ECU to develop it's glitch, so
I'd rather not put a rebuilt in and have the same thing happen to it.
Thanks again. Gerry's list to the rescue once again!
