Thank you to all for your advice. Dennis was kind enough to send along his procedure and it worked just fine. I've learned that patience is the key to bleeding the air. I had a considerable amount of air in the system (since I did it wrong in the beginning) so it took a few bleed/COOL DOWN / bleed again sessions to get the expansion tank to stop rumbling and the fluid to flow through the radiator core and across the thermoswitch. Patience and a sufficient amount of coolant to begin the job is truly key. Lesson learned from this experience: you can't bleed after you heat up. I won't be impatient next time.
