My wife and I drove our (at the time) '82 westy diesel about 10k miles around the country over the course of a summer. We went anywhere, with no regard to terrain pretty much. We just got used to driving in second, with the flashers on and windows down waving traffic by. Once you get used to not being in a hurry it was a pretty great way to see things.

As far as sleeping...once you are out west just look at the AAA maps for National forest or BLM lands and just pull over, it is everywhere. Can't beat free! We were never hassled at all.
