Thanks to all on the list who helped and special thanks to the one (1) person who said he laughed at the movie I went to such pains to make.

We started with at least four problems. All aggravated each other or had similar symptoms:

1) Water in the gas tank and probably old (>3mos) gas. 2) Injectors clogged and/or possibly rusted by #1. 3) Too tight (stupid VW hydraulic "self adjusting") intake valve, cylinder #2. 4) #3 intake valve with broken retaining clip, likely also not closing completely.

All these things give similar symptoms, of course, so we would fix one and things wouldn't change too much. It was only when Darrell Boehler (thank heaven for him) found the bad lifter on #3, and we then put in a spare set of injectors, that the engine showed an improvement.

Besides Darrell, and Chuck Hill, who lent me parts, thanks go to Robert Lilley Stuart MacMillan, who got the bad injectors thing right. And some money goes to List Admin as part of my "prize" offering. Also thanks to MANY others who responded.

I will leave the goofy movie up at www.emriver.com/vandemon.htm for a while if you want a second shot at seeing its subtle yet overbearing humor.

Steve Gough '86 Westy

PS. Silver lining(s): The van runs like a scalded dog (as they used to say in Arkansas from whence I came) because of all that tuning and tweaking, and I can do almost all the engine troubleshooting procedures with my eyes closed!
