Thanks to all who responded on this!

Knowing my question was fairly obscure, regarding a fairly obscure engine (diesel Westy owners are a cult within a cult), I hesitated to ask it. But none of my six related workshop manuals even mention it, so I hit the "SEND" button, went to lunch, and upon my return I found three replies waiting for me, with more following shortly. All offered good, experienced advice, and I hope to post a brief synopsis soon, after completing the job.

Thanks again.

Viva la Vanagon List!
