While I've heard these arguments before, this has not been my experience. I switched on our Westy as soon as we bought it in '96, van then had 160k kms on a VW rebuild, never had synthetic. (I have every receipt since new). Still running great (aside from Vanagon Syndrome) 7 years and ~40-50k kms later. I switched to synthetic Redline MTL on my 85 Jetta trans at 200k kms - still running great at 480k kms, has never leaked a drop.
