There are 2 ways to go to put an inline 4 into a Syncro using premade parts.

A. If you use the diesel Vanagon bellhousing you then MUST use the diesel Syncro tank along with the diesel Vanagon starter, flywheel, and clutch.

B. If you use a Kennedy adapter plate you must use their special flywheel and the stock Syncro tank is fine. For a starter you need either a waterboxer starter if you are using a gas inline 4 or a special high torque starter in a diesel inline 4. The waterboxer clutch fits the Kennedy flywheel and the stock bell housing is retained.

I think David Marshall sells the parts needed to go either way.
