You just reminded me of a time when I let my brakes get pretty bad on my
old '66.  I was living aboard and cash was for food and cigarettes, etc.
Finally it got so bad I was running on just one rear brake. I had to
drive 28 miles to use a friend's lift:  On the way I ran at least one
red light with no hope of stopping.  When I pulled the wheels off the
parts just fell out...including the final "working" wheel.  I think I
got every cents worth of value from those brake parts...At what risk I
shudder to contemplate.
