Indeed, verify and use the spec lubricants in the owner's manual or Bentley. Of a certainty grinding is not spec. I buy GL-3/GL-4 80/85-90 Valvoline at NAPA which meets VW/Porshce/Audi specs for the Vanagon years. It's called Ford Tractor Lube. At any medium or larger NAPA you will find it in 5 gal buckets. A helpful FLAPS counter seller might special order quarts or gallons from Valvoline. StaLube makes quarts with the GL-3/GL-4 rating and half the FLAPS around carry it or can order it. 4 or 5 quarts of either at $7.95 will dang near pay for the 5 gallon Valvoline bucket price.

Monitor level and condition of the lube. A shift to darker than clean is typical at 30 to 40 thousand miles. Any evidence of milky hue is from condensed water. See either, change the lube. And don't let any testimony alone over ride the recommendation of those who know more than the whole list combined, the engineers who designed and built and tested those systems. Verify specs, have benefit of engineered results. Listen to those who claim to know better, get mixed results.
