Subject: Passed Emissions-Failed Safety Inspection
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Well, Today I finally took the needed steps to get my '84 Westy legal in Virginia. Took it to a local garage to get emissions an safety inspection done. I expected to fail emissions and pass safety-the reverse was true. I failed safety on bad upper ball joints (been hearing a "clanking" but with so much talk about KYB shocks causing a clanking sound I assumed that was it-it wasn't) and high beam indicator light on the dash is out, plus one of the two license plates lights is out. Fairly minor stuff, except maybe the ball joints. My emissions results were as follows:

15 MPH

HC ppm: Limit 155 / Reading 155 CO% : Limit 1.31 / Reading 0.75 NO ppm: Limit 2167 / Reading 1408

25 MPH

HC ppm: Limit 151 / Reading 149 CO% : Limit 1.68 / Reading 0.83 NO ppm: Limit 2014 / Reading 1344

So, it looks like on the HC I barely made it @ 15 MPH, but it passed and that's what matters for now. I'm still chasing down my fluctuating idle, and while I've made some improvement there, it's not gone completely. Jeff
