VW recommends 15W40, and there are plenty of good *diesel* oils in this weight, Delvac 1300 is one that is fairly reasonable for a conventional oil (about $2.50 CDN per qt). Shell Rotella also has several good ones. The important thing is to use a real diesel oil that can deal with the soot created in a diesel. Some gas oils still carry the CD/CE/CF codes, but I don't trust them to work well enough. A modern diesel oil will have at least a CG-4 rating, and is usually not much more in price. I'm currently using Amsoil 15w40 Diesel Synthetic in both my gas Vanagon, and my Jetta D (or will once I fix an oil leak).
