It is always helpful to provide the year when asking these questions. Assuming 1.9l with Digijet, the box is the idle speed stabilizer. There are 2 versions, one green one black. They activate at different RPM. When the idle goes below the set point (~750-green, 850 black), it advances the ignition timing to increase the idle speed. When setting idle or timing, it needs to be bypassed by removing the 2 connectors and then plugging them together without the box.

Does anyone know, in the engine compartment on the .. left hand side wall its a green box, is that the engine transfer control unit? and is there a way to test it ? ..

and beside it is a little black box bolted on a plate, what would that be and is there a way to test it ?
