For what it's worth...

I got a used poptop and had it off of the car, which was a definate advantage in being able to clean it up and paint it.

I just tossed it in the backyard, and hit it with some high pressure water to get the slimey crud off. Then I went at it with those plastic mesh pot scrubber things... 3M makes them I think.. scotch-bright maybe.

Anyway, with scrubbing and some mild clorox solution I was able to get it really clean. Then I hit it with wet/dry sand paper... I think like a 320 corn, and sanded it all wet.

Then a few days later, I brought it in the garage away from the flies and dust, and scrubbed the whole thing with solvent to completely de-grease it. I painted it with a foam brush using 2-part epoxy yacht paint. I chose a light gray for mine. The paint was not cheap.. but it is amazing stuff. It goes on like butter, and then smooths down to a really great finish... no brush strokes or anything visible (except for a drip or two that I didn't catch).

Then I got some brand new WESTFALIA emblems and put them on, and now the pooptop sits out in the back yard and looks really slick! Way cooler than filthy white.

Would be cool to have enough time to get it onto my Vanagon one of these days.
