Once you get the circlip out of its groove, slide it back towards the end of the shaft a few inches. Then pull straight back on the collar (towards you) that slides over the input shaft - you may need to turn the differential to a certain position to get enough clearance to give it room to move. Once the collar slides back, pretend the input shaft is a screw and unscrew it!

OK, I'm getting close. I'm not sure how to get the input shaft out of the transmission. I've got the bell housing off, I took the circlip off, now what? If I turn the shaft, the transmission's gears turn (as expected).
