subject: '82 westy brake pedal action

just got a new brake job, fore and aft, and the feel of the brake pedal is a little distressing but maybe it's only moi. there's a bit of a whoosh sound as you depress the pedal and the pedal does not seem to meet resistance, which is to say brake hard, as soon as i'd like or am accustomed to. i have the sense that i can also pump it up slightly and improve on that point of resistance. but, once we get to that point, it stops firmly. pushing hard on the pedal and holding it for 10-15 seconds produces no softening so evidently no air in the system. how much play before the pedal can't move any farther downward is normal? that's more than anyone could possible want to read about a brake pedal but any chat on the subject would be appreciated. art '82 westy
