you want the tail light and the brake light to have a significant difference in brightness. If you put in a really bright bulb then you will not have the large blaring difference needed to distinguish the brake light from the tail light. But you can up the brightness of the tail light a bit as i agree it is pretty dim. Before you put in a bright bulb, try cleaning the contacts and ground connection first; that made a big difference with my lights, enought to justify leaving the stock brightness in place. Also, too bright a light WILL melt your lenses. I have seen it happen a few times!
