I'd clean the contacts first, as well as the grounds, and see if they're still dim. Check and make sure your bulbs aren't darkened from tungsten sputtered on the inside of the glass, too.

Some people have melted their lamp assemblies with higher wattage bulbs, so I'd consider that a last resort. Adding a CHMSL is a good idea, though.
