thank you everybody who responded to my cry for help. everybody said lifters and, guess what, it was the #4 lifter. collapsed. i took her in to westport automotive in louisville. very nice guy, very busy, extremely reasonable price. i also had a broken lash cap (?), which also contributed to the noise.

i'm going to stick around and have him flush and replace my coolant next week. then i'm off to bonnaroo. if you see a gold westy with texas horned lizard plates, come by and say hi.
