Joe, you can rip it out at will, but see if anyone wants the parts first. Also consider keeping it, you may want it someday. I didn't think I needed mine, then I moved to Phoenix. Yikes!

If your reason for removal is the cost of repair, there are lots of ways to fix it on your own much cheaper than at a shop.

By the way, what year is it, I'm looking for some parts myself.....
