I can tell you what I did. I replaced my clapped-out original 1.9l with a
1.9l Boston Bob engine. I didn't go 2.1 because: 1) he would not take my
old 1.9 as a core, so it would cost me another $600, and 2) no provision
for an oil cooler. Looking back, I probably should have sprung for the
2.1. Bob has told me the Digijet on the 2.1 really works well, especially
with the Euro Digijet ECU, which I bought. I don't know. The ECU makes
up a substantial amount of the missing hp, but having the larger 2.1 with
higher compression probably would be nice. My '85 will never outlast this
engine--it only sees 3K miles a year.

Subject: 1.9 VS. 2.1-worth upgrading?
im wondering if there is enough noticable difference
between the two to warrant putting a 2.1 in my 85
camper. i've read in the archives that the 2.1 tend to
throw rods more than 1.9 in old age. i guess i would
like to know if it would be worth the extra cost, will
it pull me up hills noticably easier? if not i would
probobly just stick with a 1.9 for now. thanks
