Smoke vs Mirror? The amount of VISIBLE light passing through is the
same. No difference. The smoke may give you that "he's a cool Dude"
look, but other than that has no effect.
Reflected light? That is a horse of a difference horse-feather. Highly
reflective film will give you more privacy. Metal sputtered film will
give you better heat rejection. Ceramic coated film is even better, but
works differently.
If you really want the low-down on the tint films and what they do and
how they work, visible light vs. reflected light, heat rejection, metal
sputtered films vs "not", installation behind a cabinet, etc., call Tom
Rodgers @ 205-823-8468, Artistic Solar Films. He knows more about
films industry wide than anybody I know outside the manufacturers
themselves. Been "hands on" in the tint business for right at 20 years.
It is his specialty. Ex: In addition to the ongoing auto tint business
he does commercial tinting as well. At present he (his crew under his
supervision) is installing blast proof window tint on selected buildings
on military bases. The tint will stop a .45 caliber slug fired directly
at the glass from 10 feet. Of course the glass breaks, but the slug does
not go through. He was picked by the manufacturer to install their tint,
because of his knowledge and experience with films.
I just spoke to him on the phone about auto tint applications, and could
tell you what he said, but he says it best. I told him about your
dilemma on tint selection. Call him. It's worth the time and small
expense for a phone call. He said he would be glad to talk with you so
he's sort of expecting your call.

John Rodgers
