I don't seem to recall any deadly head seal leaks with I-4s. After all, the objective is to replace a WBX with known design faults with something more reliable and perhaps with better performance. What if 180 lbs-ft of torque from 2000 to 6500 rpm was available in a modern motor that didn't require raising the deck lid? or maybe just a decent 125 lbs-ft from 2500 to 6000. The vanagon WBX was a problem for VAG from day one. Remember this box is a "truck" not a "sports car". In a camper version it is underpowered, underbraked and poorly suspended and it's at least 12 years old. You can change that.
