After buying a house and all that entails (20% down to avoid PMI, $$$, remodeling, $$$, furnishing, $$$, fixing problems not reported on the inspection, $$$) I'm ready to get my '87 back on the road.

My 2.1 dropped a valve some time back, and the original plan was to replace the right head IF there was no damage to the piston. However, I think the damage is deeper-- I hear a deep clunking noise when I turn the motor over, and I'm not about to try replacing heads when 1. it's easier to pull the engine and 2. I'm 75% certain that I'll end up pulling it anyway due to a bad rod bearing.

I thought about a Nissan conversion, but that cost way too much, as did a Boston Bob WBX rebuild (although that might happen a year or two down the road regardless). Everyone wants to swap a 2.1 into their '83-'85s, making them scarce and expensive.

This is why I'm thinking of the opposite. 1.9s are easier to come by and cheaper, and I understand that the piston pins and crankshafts are better quality anyway. I had an '84 before and power was never a big problem, and the engine never gave me any trouble.

So, in light of the fact that a 2.1 can be set up as a 1.9, can a 1.9 be set up as a 2.1? Are there any problems hooking it up to the tranny? How would the oil pressure sensor situation be dealt with?
