Most every mechanical item on this vehicle is the same as the Vanagon.
Get the Bentley Vanagon manual (http://www.busdepot.com). The diesel
engine content form the 1982 Vanagon is very similar. The wiring
diagrams are also similar, but not exactly the same. Still, very
useful.
The engine is likely the 1.6l NA diesel, although the 1.7l NA was also
delivered in Europe. Mine is the 1.6l NA. All engine parts are
available in the states - identical to the rabbits and jettas of same
vintage. Filters, timing belt, v-belts, head gasket and such are also
the same. Hoses are a little tricky, but you can often substitute for
popular sizes with a little creativity. The tranny is probably the
4-speed ACP. Similar to the waterboxer tranny, but geared very low.
You probably can go 65mph, but the engine will be screaming at 4400
rpm. Try to keep it at 60 mph to preserve your hearing and the engine.
