DEFINATELY depends on the state you're in.  In Louisiana, the
insurance companies are in cahoots with DMV and report you if
you let your policy lapse.  The DMV then automatically fines you
each time you get reported if you don't turn in your plates
beforehand, whether you drive your temporarily uninsured vehicle or
not.  DMV won't let you renew your drivers license, registration, or
do anything else without paying the fine.
