Subject: I need help on my conversion.

I am in the middle of converting my waterboxer to VW inline 8 valve motor. The '89 carbio motor is mounted with the diesel setup and I bought a brand new diesel flywheel from Ken which is also installed. I used the Vanagon friction plate and pressure which I was told is ok. I fastened the pressure plate with new hex head cap screws and washers. I received my freshly rebuilt waterboxer trans (from Daryl at AA Transaxle)with diesel bellhousing and input shaft and proceeded to install. I did remove the two alignment dowel at the starter as they didn't appear to go into anything. As I was drawing it to the engine it became difficult to turn the screws. I looked at the timing mark and noticed the pressure plate would hit it if running. I tried to rotate the crank but it was locked. I back the trans off to see the pressure plate or screws were hitting the bell housing. What's going wrong?

Thanks for any help.
