If by "main vac line" you mean the one to the intake manifold, this is probably not what you want. Distributors generally want to see the vaccuum at the carburator throat, not at the manifold. There's a big difference between the two. The carb throat is a venturi and the pressure drops as more air flows through -- more airflow means more vaccuum. The manifold vaccuum is highest with the throttle closed and lowest with it fully open. Unless Vanagon distributors work differently than the ones I'm used to (I've never had a gas Vanagon) hooking it to the manifold vaccuum line will get you full advance at idle and no advance at full throttle, the opposite of what you want. Your carb should have a little vaccuum line nipple on it somewhere for this.
