It is way widespread. A while ago I was contacted by a similar person to cash a huge cashier's check and send some to them. It was too good to be true so I did not respond.

Last week while shopping on ebay and yahoo a person wanted only a cashiers check or money order or bank transfer. I contacted over 15 of the closed sales people. Only one was foolish enough to send a money order and got ripped off. The scammer was using 3 different IDs and the same modus operandi so I reported him to ebay and yahoo. In two days he was suspended from both ebay and yahoo. He never once responded to my emails. My last email said I would be happy to send a money order if he sent me his full name, social security number, driver's license number and phone number so we could talk in person.

It takes all kinds of people who are too lazy to work for a living. Amazing.
