What you have is a European market vehicle... the ZZZ in the serial number indicates this.

Most of the OD units that I have seen like this are carbureted engines with the engine code of DF and a whole 60hp!!! These are 'special' low compression pistons that could handle and crap fuel you gave it. Plus the ignition system should be all encased for RF suppression if it is all still original. Good motors and if you put the timing to 3 BTDC as opposed to the 5 ATDC it is now you will see a nice improvement in power - just keep a minimum of 87 octane fuel in there! ;-)

If yours is fuel injected it is going to be a Digijet or a Digifant injection system. More than likely Digijet - which is the same as the 83.5-85 Vanagons in North America.

If it is a Diesel then it would be the same mechanics as the 85-92 Golf / Jetta Diesel motors with some minor variations.

If you need some Europe only parts - please give me a pmail. I generally get a shipment every six weeks or so from Germany.

Howdy Gruppe,

I just joined the list and am happy to have found the Vanagon Site!

I bought this OD Green 1986 Transporter, VIN WV2ZZZ24ZFH116974, with 4895 miles on it from the Nueces County, Texas surplus sale. It was used on a carrier's hanger deck to shuttle stuff around. It is painted OD and still has the original Continental Contrans tires. I cannot find parts or repair manuals on it since it is not a US model. I do not even know the engine size!. The second 'Z' in the VIN designates the engine type but all the VIN deciphering websites I have found here in the US do not list a Z engine. I cannot seem to access German parts sites.

I have a fuel problem - fuel comes to the injection pump but not to the injectors. Monday we take the guts out of the fuel solenoid to see if the problem is with the solenoid or with the injector pump. I will need either a solenoid or an injection pump. I also desperately need a repair manual in English, or German if I cannot find an English one.

Does anyone have suggestions for these parts here in the US? Alternatively, can any of our German members hook me up with a parts company based in Germany with a guy who speaks English and who would take Discover or MasterCard? It would have to be an independent parts supplier because official VW dealers will not sell parts to the US for non US vehicles (at least that is what the local dealer says.)
